U.S. Navy proposing project to fix dry dock used at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay

The U.S. Navy is proposing to fix the dry dock used for submarine maintenance Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.

If your car needs to be repaired you'll likely take it to a body shop or dealership, but a submarine is a little trickier.

The U.S. Navy uses what's known as a "dry dock" that can lift the submarine out of the water and submerge it during maintenance.

The dock used in St. Marys, Ga. was constructed in 1990 and the U.S. Navy wants a project to fix the equipment for safety reasons.

The first sentence is clear as day in an October report -- the dry dock is in need of major repair.

Visually, the process of removing a submarine is taxing, requiring a lot of people and heavy equipment.

Three pumps can move up to 72,000 gallons a minute to flood and drain the dry dock so work can be done on the submarines.

The dock at Kings Bay Base is the largest covered one in North America. Submarines there can sometimes get fixed-up months at a time.

A search online leads to a video of the USS Georgia undocked after extended maintenance in March.

The dock itself, however, is in need of major repair. The Navy is considering a plan that would bring in up to 500 construction workers over a three-year period to help with corrosion control, a crane overhaul and the construction of a new lift station.

According to the report, the process would have a minimal environmental impact on the surrounding area and not endanger any species.

Housing, however, may become limited to make room for the necessary workers

This is just a draft proposal and it's available for public review. The work itself would not start until March.
