Stories of Service: Gold Star Mother and Family brunch

First Coast Blue Star Mothers hosted a brunch to honor Gold Star Mothers and Families on Sunday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It's an organization that is full of people who never wanted to be a part of it.

On Sunday, the annual Gold Star Mother and Family brunch was held in Jacksonville. It was a time to share the grief of losing a child in the service of our country; a common bond that helps families support each other.

"As a mother of a son who served in the Navy, I could have received one of those calls and I'm honored to do events like this for our Gold Star Families," said Junnie Watson, president of the Jacksonville nonprofit First Coast Blue Star Mothers.

Cherished pictures and mementos of loved ones who died in the line of duty are assembled at the brunch, thus making sure brave men and women are more than a memory for their family members.

"I want to make sure these families, the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, get the honor they should deserve for their child or family member losing their life in the military," said Sue Reynolds, vice president of the First Coast Blue Star Mothers and a Gold Star Mother herself.

"We are all here full of immense gratitude to remember your loved one," said Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan. "To share in your grief and offer support as your life has clearly been forever changed."

Deegan read a proclamation during the event. And Councilmembers Nick Howland and Chris Miller were present as well as Jacksonville's Director of Military Affairs and Veterans Department Harrison Conyers, all to give thanks to mothers and families for a painful loss in their life so that we can continue to enjoy our freedom.

"I try to remember my son every day," Reynolds told First Coast News. "My husband passed away from the effects of Agent Orange. And I remember him, too. Say their names and they are never forgotten."

Gold Star Mothers and Families Day is observed nationally on the last Sunday in September. So, on Sunday, the sacrifice of thousands of people will be recognized across the country.
