The next 'Call of Duty' ships off to space

It seems the war portrayed in first-person shooter Call of Duty has grown too big for the Earth to contain.

It seems the war portrayed in first-person shooter Call of Duty has grown too big for the Earth to contain.

On Monday, video game publisher Activision Blizzard confirmed the series' next adventure -- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare -- will launch on November 4 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

As countless leaks and other reports have revealed, the blockbuster franchise from Activision will launch into outer space, boasting space ship combat within our solar system.

As the trailer shows, this still very much resembles the textbook Call of Duty video game. Only we have to worry about gravity now. And space ships.

The video game is being developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created Call of Duty and last launched a game in the series in 2013 with Call of Duty: Ghosts. Activision has two other studios -- Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games -- working on Call of Duty to maintain the franchise's schedule of a new release every year.

It's not clear what the plot of Infinite Warfare will entail, other than lots of warfare, obviously. A statement from Activision says players will command their own warship and battle against a "relentless enemy." No details were provided on Infinite Warfare's multiplayer, a game mode and arguably the signature feature of all Call of Duty titles.

The game will be available as a standalone option or part of The Legacy Edition, which will feature a remastered version of the classic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. No big deal, it's only the Call of Duty game that propelled the franchise into blockbuster status and made Activision gobs of cash.
