Nearly two months into spring, parts of Maine still have not seen their last snowfall of the season.
Between 4 and 7 inches of snow slammed northern Maine on Monday, Mark Bloomer of the National Weather Service said. Caribou, Maine, about 10 miles west of the Canadian border, saw 4½ inches, the most snow in the area this late in the season since 1939.
Bloomer called the storm a "special situation" in which very cold air from northern Canada went right across the Hudson Bay and met in Maine with moisture from the Northeast.
"The two combined to create this localized area of moderate to heavy snow across northeast Maine," he said.
The snow didn't last with Tuesday's high of 56 degrees in Caribou. The National Weather Service is predicting sunny weather for the rest of the week with highs in the low to mid-70s by the weekend.
