JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Monday kicks off the Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, a 10-day training Navy sailors do every year to put their defense skills to the test.
Training exercises consist of simulating possible attacks in the air, on sea or on land. The sailors are put through these different scenarios so, they are prepared for any kind of threat to protect those living in Jacksonville and throughout the United States.
If you are around Naval Station Mayport, any other Navy base, or NAS Jacksonville, you may hear sirens or gunshots during periods of the training. Be aware that it could just be part of the training.
"Making sure we are communicating across the board so everyone is aware of what's going on and what are the measures and steps they can do to keep safe," Mayport Naval Base Security Director Jason Schwartz told First Coast News. "So, a huge part of it is involving the families and making notifications to everyone."
Schwartz adds that drivers around Mayport or the other Naval bases should anticipate traffic delays over the next week.
