A woman was killed after being run over by a Jacksonville Transportation Authority bus in the Mayport area Saturday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Police said they were called to the 4200 block of Ocean Street in reference to a traffic fatality around 12:30 p.m.
At the scene, police found a woman who was approximately 50-years-old dead in the road, police said.
Upon initial investigations, police learned that the woman, who lives in the area, somehow became entangled in the bus and was then ran over. She died at the scene from her injuries, police said.
JTA released this statement on Monday:
"We haven’t released the driver’s name yet as we are waiting on JSO to complete its investigation.
I can confirm the driver has been placed on what’s called “Hold Off” status, meaning he was removed from service following the accident and will remain away from service until the investigation is completed."
Police are speaking with witnesses who saw the incident happen and the Traffic Homicide Team is investigating.
Ocean Street was closed for multiple hours as police work the scene. Traffic was re-directed through Mayport Village.
JTA Media and Public Relations Manager, David Cawton II, released the following statement about the incident:
"The Jacksonville Transportation Authority would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. The safety and security of our customers, employees and the community is paramount. We are cooperating with the JSO's ongoing investigation to get to the bottom of what happened."
