JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Adults looking to beat the heat with an ice-cold alcoholic beverage can do so while enjoying a stroll along the St. Johns River, thanks to a new program.
The City of Jacksonville's new Open Container Riverwalk Cup Program officially launched July 1, 2024.
This means people walking along the St. Johns River will be able to buy an alcoholic beverage in a special to-go cup from a participating business.
The cups are branded with the Riverwalk logo. People can have a maximum of two to-go cups at any time.
Businesses participating in this program include Chart House, St. Johns Provisions in the Double Tree by Hilton, SHOR Seafood Grill, TAVERN in the Hyatt Regency, Morton's the Steakhouse and Southbank Johnnie's.
People can also take the to-go cups to the Riverwalk during special events at the Jacksonville Center for Performing Arts, Riverside Arts Market and St. Johns River Taxi.
The to-go cups will only be allowed in the designated Riverwalk areas and people cannot use their own alcohol.
Jermaine Brown lives in Jacksonville. He believes the new program will be good for Downtown businesses.
“That’s very good because not everyone wants to sit down and have a drink. I think it will bring more to the establishment because you can leave with the to-go drinks," Brown said.
The Open Container Cup program will run seven days a week.
- Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m. to Midnight.
- Sunday to Thursday: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
