GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — The first phase of a street redevelopment project in Green Cove Springs is now open to the public.
Both sides of Walnut Street are now back open after the city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday afternoon.
The city released a timelapse of the construction, showing the improvements. The project included roadway reconstruction, new sidewalks, improved drainage, new landscaping and updated street lighting.
The owner of an art studio on Walnut Street is hoping the pedestrian-friendly layout will lead to more foot traffic in the area.
"It's been very exciting now that it’s done because it’s fresh and new and beautiful. Everyone seems to enjoy walking around and seeing the shops they didn’t know were here before,” said Heather Ivy, the owner of The Art Room.
Phase one of the project was improving Walnut Street from Palmetto Avenue to Magnolia Avenue.
Phase two picks up from Magnolia Avenue to the St. Johns River.
