TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Tampa has officially changed its nickname to "UTampa," with the goal to strengthen its national awareness and separate itself from other universities.

Prior to the change, the school was referenced as "UT." According to UTampa President Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg, the new nickname will increase the university's reputation as a model of higher education, and make it a household name.

“There are numerous other UTs in the higher education space, including the universities of Texas, Tennessee, Toledo, Toronto and Tulsa,” Dahlberg said in a statement. “Since its founding, the University has been closely linked to the city of Tampa, and by calling ourselves UTampa, we can strengthen that association, eliminate confusion and assert our pride in our University and our city.”

Dahlberg added that the name would take pride in one of its distinguishing features: being in downtown Tampa, which is transforming into a "world-class destination."

The university also introduced three new, enhanced logos alongside the nickname change.
