16-year-old among two killed in Yulee trailer-house fire

Nassau County Fire Rescue Chief Brady Rigdon said one person was rescued and taken to a Gainesville hospital in critical condition.

YULEE, Fla. — Two people died and one person was rescued from a trailer-house fire in Yulee Monday morning, Nassau County Fire Rescue tells First Coast News.

The fire occurred at 5:30 a.m. Monday at 85391 Phillips Rd., according to Nassau County Fire Rescue Chief Brady Rigdon.

When crews arrived, Rigdon says firefighters began attacking the fire from outside the home because the amount of fire and heat they encountered was too significant to fight the flames from inside.

"The amount of fire and the amount of heat that they encountered early on was just to significant to make an interior attack," Rigdon said.

The two individuals who died in the fire were not found together, according to Rigdon, and the one person who was rescued escaped from the backside of the house.

Now, a Yulee family is mourning the loss of a grandfather and a grandson.

The home that caught fire is owned by Jessica Paraday-Wheeldon, according to her son, William Bramstedt.

Bramstedt told First Coast News the two people killed in the fire were family members Carlton Wheeldon and 16-year-old Blake Hendricks. Carlton is the homeowner's father, and Hendricks is the homeowner's son, according to Bramstedt.

The pair were the only people inside the home, and the homeowner was sleeping in a camper next to the trailer when it caught fire, Bramstedt said.

The family's dogs were also inside the trailer at the time of the fire and were unable to be saved.

A family member created a GoFundMe to help with funeral arrangements and replacing the family's belongings.

Bramstedt added the man rescued from the flames was a friend of Carlton, but did not specify the man's name or age.

The man was taken to a Gainesville hospital in critical condition, according to NCFR.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire.

"State Fire Marshal Office's investigators have a tough job and they do a good job in trying to determine the cause so, we'll see what the investigation reveals," Rigdon told First Coast News.
