Five people were injured Sunday after a tornado hit Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, according to a spokesperson.
The victims were transported to local medical facilities and have since been released, said PIO Chris Tucker from the naval base. Their injuries were not severe, according to Tucker.
The tornado was initially reported to be a category EF2, but was corrected and upgraded Wednesday to a EF3. The last EF3 or stronger tornado to hit the area was back in Feb. 25, 1960 in Lake City.
The impact of the storm was isolated to a waterfront pier facility at the southeast corner of the lower base, he said.
A First Coast News viewer submitted a video of a tornado making its way in Kingsland.
NSBKB emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to assess and respond to the damage, according to a statement from the base.
A Camden County neighborhood watch group said via Facebook one man was hospitalized with injuries after he was trapped under a truck by the tornado. The same group says two other people were thrown into the water and were found under the pier "holding on for life."
The tornado was confirmed at 3:15 p.m. by the National Weather Center.
As a precaution, Walmart locked down its store to protect shoppers.
Downed power poles, flipped vehicles and wind damage have also been confirmed. Responders have been sent from the Naval base, according to Bassett. No submarines were damaged.
First Coast News viewer Eric Williams posted a photo to Twitter of what looked like the beginning of a tornado in the area.
