'The whole house shook': Loud noises in the sky lead to damaged property in Putnam County

The Florida National Guard confirms F-15s were in the area at the time, and is investigating to see if it's at fault for the damage.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — For people in southern Putnam County, loud noises in the sky this past weekend literally rocked their world, and not in a good way.

Thirty 911 calls were placed by people who had homes and property damaged by something that flew overhead.

"It was late Saturday morning, and this loud noise came roaring over the house. The whole house shook," Teresa Bruce remembered. She and her husband did not know what was happening at their home in Crescent City in southern Putnam County.

She said it blew artwork off the walls, exploded the bathroom light fixture and its lightbulbs, and the porch roof was "going in waves."

Nearby friend Sue Delp had a similar experience at the same time.

"Three explosions. My first thought was 'We’re at war! They’re dropping bombs!' That’s how bad the house shook," said Delp.

At the Bruce house, "the horses were running everywhere. Dogs were freaking out. The cat was freaking out."

Starting at 10 a.m., thirty 911 calls came into the Putnam County Sheriff's Office about the incident and noise.

Bruce told First Coast News, "There was a post on Facebook. People posted that they had damage. Windows were blown out. Somebody said their toilet exploded. Someone said it took the whole roof off their shed."

Bruce, trying to get some answers, called NAS JAX, thinking it was the Navy's planes that caused the noises.

However, the woman on the phone told Bruce that it was not the Navy. Instead, Bruce was told it was the Florida National Guard.

First Coast News reached out to the Florida National Guard. It confirms that F-15 jets were in the area of southern Putnam County Saturday morning at the time of the noises.

However, the Florida National Guard is not confirming it is responsible for the damage caused to homes across the area. The Florida National Guard is investigating to see if it is at fault.

A statement from the Florida National Guard says, "The Florida Air National Guard recently became aware of damage and noise complaints as a result of low-altitude training in Putnam County on Saturday, March 2nd. In response to this event, FLNG command has directed that an investigation take place to determine the facts and implement any necessary measures to prevent this type of incident in the future."

It continued, "The Florida National Guard extends its deepest apologies for any resulting damage and the negative impact to the local community."

The Florida National Guard provided contact information for people who sustained damage to their homes Saturday morning. Anyone can email ng.fl.flarng.list.pao@army.mil or call 904-823-0166.

Bruce hopes her home is not structurally damaged, and she wants someone to be accountable.

"Someone needs to speak to me. And to speak to all the people in this town about the damage to their homes Wee need to be addressed," Bruce said.
