Heavy rains prompt Reba corn maze to close Friday night in St. Johns County

The corn maze itself is fine, but the parking lots are soggy.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla — Thursday's heavy rains led the owners of a local corn maze to close for Friday night. The good news: the corn maze itself is okay.

The bad news: the parking lot is soggy.

Bucky Sykes and his daughter Jamie Losco own the Sykes Family Farm Corn Maze in Elkton.  It's an autumn farm experience, and this year's maze design celebrated country music star Reba McEntire.

"People love Reba," Losco laughed.

But she and her father weren't laughing about the 5-7 inches of rain that fell on their business Thursday.

"It was rough. We really didn’t need it," Sykes said.

So the Sykes family made a hard decision.

"The decision was just to close tonight Friday, October 13th," Losco told First Coast News. "It's just mainly to preserve our parking lots for our bigger days which are Saturday and Sunday and  just to prevent our parking lots from being rutted up. We need to just to give it more time to dry out."

They said the elaborate maze is okay because it has an irrigation system.

Not only did Sykes' parking lot get a lot of water, so did his vegetable crop of cabbage, bok choy, and radishes.

"I think our radishes are probably going  to be in trouble," Sykes said. "As far as the other stuff, it’s still growing."

The corn maze will only be closed Friday night, and the Sykes family is optimistic the farm fun and corn maze amusement will resume Saturday.
