JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The St. Johns River Ferry will be out of service most of February due to infrastructure improvements that will be made, as well as for scheduled maintenance, according to a Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) Facebook post.
The St. Johns River Ferry is a car and passenger ferry that connects the north and south ends of Florida State Road A1A, linking Mayport Village and Fort George Island. The trip takes roughly five minutes and departs every half hour, according to JTA. Ferry service will be temporarily suspended from Feb. 5 to Feb. 26.
JTA says the "preventative maintenance" will both enhance customer safety and extend the vessel’s service life. A JTA news release states that upgrades will include installing catwalk access and mooring bollards at Ft. George Island, comprehensive updates to warehouse equipment and systems, improved signage, preservation and refurbishment of the bridge gantry, replacement of the approach slab and renovations to the Ft. George breakroom.
"We understand how important this service is to the community," said JTA CEO Nat Ford Sr. "We’re working with our partners both to reduce the time the vessel is unavailable to our customers, while ensuring that the ferry will provide the best possible service for years to come."
Further updates and information about the ferry service outage will be provided on JTA's social media platforms, the official JTA website and here.
