ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies arrested one suspect and detained another after a stolen Ferrari led them on a chase from St. Johns County into Flagler County Tuesday afternoon.
The stolen Ferrari was related to a home invasion incident in Rhode Island on Aug. 24 where Cranston, Rhode Island police said 20-year-old Jonathan Costa was one of two suspects who broke into a home with guns and demanded keys to a 2018 Ferrari Spider.
Two days later, the Ferrari led officers on a high-speed pursuit from Rhode Island to Connecticut and was able to escape. It was then pursued by New York state troopers and managed to escape, again.
Cranston, Rhode Island detectives obtained arrest warrants for Costa and 18-year-old Logan Slezak, charging them with breaking into the home and stealing the Ferrari.
Costa was arrested by Flagler County deputies Tuesday after another high-speed chase starting on I-95 in St. Johns County and ending at a home in Palm Coast.
Two schools in St. Johns County, Pedro Menendez High School and Southwoods Elementary, were put on lockdown briefly while the vehicle passed through the county as a precaution. The schools have since resumed normal operation.
According to Flagler County Officer D. Williams, Costa and another individual in the Ferrari attempted to hide the vehicle at a residence on Royal Palm Lane. Deputies surrounded the home and talked Costa and another individual out of the house and into custody without incident.
Costa was arrested at the scene and Slezak was arrested in Rhode Island an hour or so later, according to ABC 6.
While Costa faces charges in Rhode Island, he now faces a handful of new ones in Florida.
"At a minimum, we have felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and a few other charges as well," Williams said.
Williams added that a firearm was recovered from the residence.
