St. Augustine to hold meeting to select new mayor following Nancy Shaver's resignation

As the mayor of St. Augustine for nearly five years, Nancy Shaver leaves big shoes to fill, as she now turns her attention to her health.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — First thing Monday morning at 9 a.m. the city of St. Augustine will hold a special meeting in regards to selecting a new leader after Mayor Nancy Shaver resigned following a stroke the previous week.

As the mayor of St. Augustine for nearly five years, Nancy Shaver leaves big shoes to fill, as she now turns her attention to her full recovery.

City Manager John Regan says, in her wake, they’ve already received upwards of 15 to 20 people interested in vying for the job.

“A number of names have circulated and a number of people have called in expressing a desire,” said Regan.

They’re on the clock because if the city commission doesn’t choose someone within 10 days Governor Ron DeSantis will fill the vacancy.

“It could be tomorrow, or it could take a second meeting,” said Regan.

Regan says it must be a majority vote, which would be three commissioners in agreement.

The replacement would serve out the rest of Shaver’s time in office, which lasts until December 7th of 2020.

“Most likely we will pick someone outside of the commission,” he said.

According to City Charter, the vice mayor, or another commissioner, may only fill in for the mayor during temporary absences, not in the case of a resignation. The applicant must live within city limits and be of voting age.

Regan says Shaver will not be involved in this process.

He says she is 100 percent focused on her health at this time.
