ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — St. Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver had a stroke Monday night, right after the city commission meeting.
Shaver was still at City Hall when staff members noticed her falling ill. Emergency rescue was called and she was transported to Flagler Hospital.
It was at the hospital where doctors determined Shaver had suffered from a stroke. She is still there this evening and is expected to be there for a few days. She will continue to hold her mayoral seat in the meantime.
The stroke came after a night of a heated exchange between Shaver and another city commissioner during Monday's city commission meeting about a city land purchase deal.
Of course, we don't know if that led to the stroke, but one close friend says Shaver has been dealing with a lot of stress for a few weeks.
At the end of the meeting, Shaver shared with commissioners that her breast cancer had returned.
