Southside woman battling cancer forced to leave apartment due to leaking roof

Sheila Reed's roof been leaking for the last week and a half. She's forced to sleep in her living room out of fear of her ceiling falling and due to health reasons.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — All of the heavy rainfall on the First Coast has caused flooded streets and for one Southside woman she's rassling with a leaking roof every time it rains.

Sheila Reed's been living at Lakewood Oaks for 14 years, but in the last week and a half a leaking roof has moved her out of her bedroom and potentially her apartment all together.

“It wasn’t like this at first then it started leaking," said Reed.

Reed's roof in her bedroom is now cracked and leaks water every time it rains.

“It’s constantly just coming, constantly coming because it filled that bucket up a couple of times.”

She's now been forced to sleep in her living room out of fear of her ceiling falling and due to health reasons.

December 2023, Reed was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment and just last Friday she got pneumonia.

“I’m almost done but I know I still have a road ahead of me but I don’t need this to make me any sicker," she said.

First Coast News sat down with Sheila Reed as she showed us the letter she emailed to her apartment's leasing office alerting them of her ceiling. She also said she informed the office as soon as she noticed the crack.

“She came In Friday with some people to look and said ‘we’re going to take care of it’ and walked back out and I haven’t heard anything else from them," said Reed.

After speaking with Reed, we spoke with the leasing office.

According to an office employee, they were aware of Reed's leaking. They told First Coast News that because of the weather there's nothing roofers can do at this time.

Since no work can be done, Reed's decided to go leave her apartment until things resolve.

“I cant stay in here so my sister was like ill come get you," she said, "I just want it fixed that’s it.”
