JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — For two months now, trash has been piling up in and around dumpsters at the Villas at the Woodlands apartment complex on the Southside.
People who live at the complex are waiting for something to be done about the trash.
Mountains of trash covered in flies and a strong stench is what residents at Villas at the Woodlands say they have become accustomed to in the last eight weeks.
"We got gnats, we got roaches," said one resident.
For five years, Bob King's been living in this complex.
"It was alright until a couple months ago," said King.
King said normally trash gets picked up once a week but for months now pickup stopped.
"I don’t know how it got this way," he said.
Another resident told First Coast News many elderly and disabled people live in these apartments and see the mounds of trash as a big safety concern.
"We just want this resolved," she said. "We just want it resolved. A lot of us are disabled, a lot of us have health issues, so it's kind of hard for us because I have asthma…that right there is a health and a safety issue not just for me but for anyone who has a health issues, not a good thing."
Over the last two months, both neighbors say they've reached out to the apartment's management office to see when the trash would be picked up but they continue to get the same response.
"I called them and said 'It’s piling up, its piling up,'" said King. "They said we’re working on it."
According to residents, the city's code enforcement has been made aware of the issue and an inspector visited the complex on Wednesday but the mounds of trash remain.
First Coast News reached out to the apartment's management on Thursday but have not heard back from them at this time.
