JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After seven years, Shannon Johnson, a Jacksonville mother, is still waiting for justice after her son was killed in a hit-and-run.
Every year around the time of her son's death, she reminds the drivers to remain aware and alert for pedestrians while driving at night. Johnson's son Shane Reed, 27, was riding his bike in a neighborhood at Jacksonville's Northside on Halloween. Someone hit Reed from behind at the intersection of Cole and Spaulding Road.
Who ever hit Reed didn't stop to render aid.
"I still feel like somebody knows something. It's torture for me," Johnson said. "They [the suspect] left the scene. Don't know who done it and then you got to worry about all these little kids out here."
First Coast News reached out to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for an update on the hit-and-run investigation. Officials said no arrests have been made yet and investigators are still looking for information that could identify a potential suspect. Johnson says drivers should slow down and put their phones away.
Data from the Florida Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles show there have been 397 pedestrian crashes in 2024. Twenty-eight were fatal. In 2023, there were 476 pedestrian crashes with 43 fatalities.
