JSO Patrol Officer, Karen Goodin, is presented an award by Sheriff John Rutherford.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Every day they go to work, they put their lives on the line. Thursday, dozens of officers and people within the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office were honored for their hard work.

One of those officers was officer Karen Goodin.

Goodin, who has 22-and-a-half years of experience with JSO, was investigating a rash of burglaries in JSO's zone 2. Her investigation found several jewelry pieces that were allegedly pawned by a family and matched the jewelry to area burglaries.

She and her partner went to several pawn shops, then they got a tip that the suspects were inside the Big Cash Pawn shop on Beach on July 31, 2013.

"A father, a mother and a daughter," Goodin said.

Police got into a struggle with suspect Edward Garvin, who was armed. Police said a bullet ricocheted and hit her partner, Officer JC Prentice, who is fine.

Police said her work led to the arrests of Edward Garvin, his wife Sherry Garvin and their daughter Teal Garvin. Edward Garvin is facing six counts of attempted murder and several other charges.

"It really did blossom into a big investigation," Goodin said. "It makes me feel good that my supervisors recognize hard work."

Thursday, Goodin was honored with the Police Officer of the Month Award for her hard work.

"It feels good to be honored," she said.

She's part of Zone 2's residential burglary task force and their work helped return over 170 pieces of jewelry to their owners.

"That's what I enjoy doing and I'm thankful to be in a position I can do that." she said with a smile.
