JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Racers only have from sunrise to a little after sunset to complete the course this Saturday during the Mug Race.
The trek is 38 nautical miles, specifically from the Memorial Bridge in Putnam County, to the finish line at the Buckman bridge.
And depending on the boat size depends on the class you're in. The largest boats start off just before 8 AM, and the launches happen all morning.
Racers say it's competitive, but most of the fleet's goal is just hoping to finish and get a class trophy.
“It's kind of challenging because the river is gustier than most places so that keeps you on your toes dealing with the gusty winds,” said Henry Korous, a member of the Rudder Club of Jacksonville.
You may be wondering how it got its name seventy years ago. During the race's inaugural year, the first boat to dock got a mug of beer, hence the name Mug Race. Yes, that's still the prize today.
