Huguenot Park closed after part of park road washed away

Officials said the park reopened at noon on Saturday and will be open normal hours on Sunday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: Huguenot Memorial Park is back open Saturday afternoon after closing due to road damage caused by high tide and other weather conditions on Friday.

Officials said the park reopened at noon on Saturday and will be open normal hours on Sunday.

----------------END OF UPDATE----------------

People looking to enjoy the weekend at Huguenot Memorial Park will need to find other plans.

The park is currently closed due to damage to the road caused by high tide and other weather conditions.

Signs indicating that Huguenot Memorial Park was closed for repairs were posted on Heckscher Drive miles before the park entrance. Even at the entrance to the park the double-red flags were flown to indicate the water was closed to the public.

Crews spent most of the day clearing away debris from the washed away road so that fill could be brought in to strengthen the part of the road that still remains.

The entire righthand side of the roadway was washed away for more than 50 yards and some of the damage even stretched beyond the double yellow line into the left lane.

Further into the park part of the road is fortified by large rocks after significant damage was caused in previous years by hurricane Matthew and Irma.

The part of the road that was washed away this week was not protected by large rocks, leaving it exposed to the St. Johns River.

For those who wanted to go to the beach this weekend, staff at Huguenot Park recommended they go to other beaches like Hannah Park or Big Talbot Island.
