Families and beachgoers enjoying an afternoon near the Jacksonville Beach Pier were witnesses to a disturbing scene on Friday morning.
The Jacksonville Beach Police Department said a man who fell from a crane appeared to be attempting suicide.
It happened on the north side of the pier near 6th Avenue North.
A video, taken from a distance and sent to First Coast News by a viewer, shows the man standing on top of the crane before falling to the ground in front of at least one family and those on the beach.
The video shows the man was wearing what looked like a red and white costume.
Police say the man still had a pulse, but later died while being transported to the hospital.
The crane is being used to rebuild the pier.
