JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A military bomb was discovered in the backyard of a home on Jacksonville's Eastside last month, according to a newly-released Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report obtained by First Coast News on Tuesday.
On March 20, JSO units responded to 1431 East 15th St. after Mathew Smith, 35, called the sheriff's office following the discovery of the bomb, the incident report states.
Smith told police his dog was digging in the backyard of his home and pulled the object out of the ground, according to the report.
"The complainant [Smith] went over and pulled up on the device and quickly realized what it was and told everyone to go inside," the report states.
Police say the bomb appeared to be "military ordinance" and looked like it had been buried for a long period of time based on the decay.
JSO blocked off 15th Street and 16th Street from Haines to Bennett, and evacuated houses surrounding Smith's home, the report states. No injuries were reported.
