BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The remains of Charles and Catherine Romer, a couple missing for 44 years, have been positively identified as the remains found inside a car at the bottom of a pond this past weekend, according to their family.
The discovery, which resolves an unsolved cold case, was made after divers found the couple’s remains inside a car at the bottom of a retention pond in Brunswick over the weekend.
Crews recovered the vehicle from the pond Tuesday night following an extensive search by Glynn County Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which included draining the pond in search for additional remains.
The Romers were last seen in 1980 when they checked into a hotel in Brunswick.
In a statement issued Thursday, the Romers' family expressed a mixture of sadness and relief.
"We are deeply saddened and equally relieved that our grandparents Charles and Catherine Romer's 44-year mystery disappearance has been solved," the family said. "While this discovery brings closure, it still has been very emotional."
