Putnam County Sheriff's office investigating how edibles were passed around elementary school

Two students were sent to the hospital.

INTERLACHEN, Fla. — Rescue personnel responded to Jenkins Elementary School in Interlachen Thursday after a child became sick and exhibited signs of an overdose, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the age ranges of the students were 12 and 13. They're also in the sixth grade.

On Friday, Sheriff Gator DeLoach said the school's principal told deputies they ate cannabis infused candy. Four students ate edibles, but two were taken to the hospital. They were reported to be okay.

DeLoach said a female student asked her boyfriend on social media to deliver the edibles. He said this incident should be a reminder for parents to remain vigilant in their child's social media activity and what comes in-and-out the house.

"I want to take a moment to empower parents," Sheriff DeLoach said. "Go through your children's backpacks. It's not our responsibility to be their friend. It's our responsibility to parent them and make certain that they're making good choices all the time."

The students who ate the edibles returned to school Friday. The sheriff said this is still an ongoing investigation. He mentioned how this could turn into a felony case, possibly child neglect. It is possible, according to the sheriff, PCSO will conduct sweeps with Putnam Schools to make sure students aren't bringing anything illegal on campuses.

PCSO says with the prevalence of marijuana cards and availability of CBD over-the-counter, it wants to stress the importance of parents and families in keeping these items away from children and preventing them from being easily accessible.
