ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A public meeting is set for Tuesday evening, allowing community members to learn details about the plan to raise and rehabilitate the seawalls around the Castillo de San Marcos in Downtown St. Augustine.
The National Park Service (NPS) is hosting the meeting to provide the public with more details on the multimillion-dollar project.
NPS said the project aims to repair damage to the historic fort's seawalls sustained during storms while also improving the experience for guests and minimizing impacts on natural and cultural resources.
The current conditions of the seawall sections range from fair to poor condition, according to NPS. Raising the seawall could also help prevent flooding and build resiliency for the historic downtown area.
The meeting is set from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Renaissance St. Augustine Historic Downtown Hotel located at 6 West Castillo Dr. Anyone can also attend the meeting virtually on Zoom, click here for more information.
Residents have until July 17 to give their comments on the project. The public can view a newsletter with project information and submit written comments on the NPS's Planning, Environment and Public Comment website.
NPS said the next public meeting will be held in September 2024.
