JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An Arlington family says they were shocked to learn their stolen car was involved in a theft investigation in the Philips Highway area Wednesday night.
The incident took place sometime before 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart, where police activity was reported.
So far, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has released little information about what happened, but says it was a theft and no injuries were reported.
The On Your Side team also found out a car involved in the incident was reported stolen.
A pair of boots and their child’s toy are some of the few personal items the Sibby family was able to recover.
“So, I was going to work. I walked downstairs and I noticed that my car was missing," Arlington resident Arrielle Sibby said. "Then, I looked around and my husband's car was missing as well. I was in complete shock. So, I walked back upstairs to make sure I wasn't still sleeping.”
Sibby says she reported their cars stolen from their Arlington home about a month ago, and hadn’t heard anything back from JSO until Wednesday.
She said she never imagined that their cars would be stolen from their gated community. Let alone, one of them would end up in the middle of an investigation.
“That was very shocking. I was not expecting that," Sibby explained. "I was thinking someone just taking it, joy riding and we'd be able to find it. But, not in this sense.“
The back window of the car is broken. The glass from it was scattered all over the crime scene. So, the Sibby family is having the car towed off.
This is a developing story and First Coast News is working to learn more from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
