'Please, please don't do this': Opening statements underway in Jacksonville murder trial

Bursey Armstrong faces two second degree murder charges, one for Jacksonville DJ Tasheka Young, and the other for her unborn child.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The trial of a man accused of killing a Jacksonville radio personality started Monday.

Bursey Armstrong faces two charges of second degree murder for the death of Tasheka Young, known professionally as TySheeks, and her unborn child.

This all started just under two years ago, when Young, who was four months pregnant at the time, was found unresponsive at Mission Pointe Apartments on the Northside.

The prosecutor gave some insight into the day she was found.

"Please, please, please don't do this," said Assistant State Attorney Sheila Loizos. "Those are the last words a neighbor ever heard from Tasheka Young."

The prosecutor in Bursey Armstrong's case says a neighbor heard those calls just after one in the morning, but it wasn't until later that afternoon that Tasheka Young's mother found her, with her one and three year old in the room with her.

"She has 12-month-old Bailey sitting next to her dead mother, holding her hand," said Loizos.

Bursey Armstrong, the father of Young’s two children came to the apartment while detectives were investigating and was detained.

Police found a gun and bloody clothes underneath the stairs at Armstrong’s parent’s home, where he told police he was staying.

The prosecutor says when police left the interrogation room after telling him he was going to be charged with murder, he tried to escape.

"He takes one of the chairs at the table, puts it on the table, climbs up on the table, and he's trying to get through the tiles in the roof," said Loizos.

Armstrong pleaded not guilty to both charges.

His defense attorney had a much shorter address for the jury in his opening remarks.

“If the state fails to prove this case without a reasonable doubt, to you, in here, we will ask you to acquit him," said Defense Attorney Chuck Fletcher.

The state attorney said the jury will hear from down stairs neighbor, officer who was on scene and Young's mother Tuesday.
