Pasco County deputies responded after receiving multiple reports of a man swinging a sword around kids on Thanksgiving.
SHADY HILLS, Fla. — A man was shot during a welfare check in Pasco County on Thanksgiving after the sheriff's office says he was reportedly swinging a sword around kids.
It happened sometime in the "early evening" on Thursday in the area of Boland Avenue in Shady Hills.
Deputies initially responded after they received multiple reports of the man swinging a sword. When they arrived, the man was inside of his home before he then came outside with a gun, the sheriff's office detailed.
That's when deputies shot the man.
Deputies then were said to render medical aid before he was taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries are described as "non-life-threatening."
Both the sword and gun were recovered from the scene.
The deputy who fired the shot that hit the man has been placed on paid administrative leave, pursuant to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office policy. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will assume the investigation, which remains ongoing.
The sheriff's office did not release the man's identity who was shot, nor have they detailed any potential charges.

In the early evening of Nov. 28, Pasco Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to multiple reports of an individual swinging a sword in the vicinity of juveniles in the Boland Ave. area of Shady Hills. Deputies conducted a welfare check on the individual and he was located inside his residence. Verbal contact was made, and the individual came outside with a firearm, leading to deputies shooting the subject.
The subject was struck and deputies immediately rendered medical aid. The subject was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Deputies retrieved the sword and firearm. A portion of the deputy’s body camera footage is available here.
As per PSO’s standard protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the deputy-involved shooting. There is no public safety threat. The deputy who fired the lethal round has been placed on paid administrative leave pursuant to policy. The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time.
