'Never crossed my mind it could be breast cancer': Do you check above your breast?

Peggy says she could feel a lump up near her collar bone. She says it felt like a firm sausage, and it was several inches long. She thought it couldn't be cancer.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Do you ever feel for breast cancer above your breast?

"It never crossed my mind it would be breast cancer," Peggy says. The mom of six says she could feel a lump, but it was above her breast. It was right under her collar bone.

At first Peggy dismissed it.  The lump, she says, felt firm, like a kielbasa sausage and it was several inches long.

Then Peggy told her daughter, who urged her to see a doctor.

Turns out it was breast cancer.

Breast cancer experts remind you to do a self exam over the entire area which has breast tissue.  Even though not all breast tissue protrudes like your immediate breast area, you can still have cancer develop.

So where do you check?  Feel for a hard or firm or unusual lump from your collar bone, down to your bra line under your breast and up under your arm.

The upper-outer quadrant is the #1 spot for breast cancer to develop.  The second most common spot is your nipple area.

If something feels different, ask your health care provider.

Peggy says, after breast cancer surgery and treatment, she is grateful she paid attention.
