One teen is dead and two others were rushed to a hospital after the vehicle they were in crashed into a tree in the Oakleaf neighborhood Monday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
JSO said all three boys were from Oakleaf High School when they crashed into the tree at around 2 p.m. Witnesses told police the car was traveling at a high speed and may have been racing two other vehicles.
The crash happened at Oakleaf Village Parkway and Merchants Way, police said. Oakleaf Parkway was briefly shut down but has since reopened.
One post said, "Please keep my extended family in your prayers because we just lost our son do [sic.] to a deadly accident. My kids are taking this extremely hard. Lord give us the strength but most importantly his mother needs you. Oh God he was only 16 and a great kid."
Clay County District Schools released the following statement regarding the crash:
“We are deeply saddened to learn that a junior at Oakleaf High School has passed away due to a car accident in the Oakleaf community this afternoon. It has been confirmed that two other students were in the vehicle as well and both have suffered serious injuries. The District will provide grief counseling services at Oakleaf High School’s campus beginning tomorrow to support students, staff and family members during this very difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones. Our entire school district is saddened by this devastating news. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as we work through the pain and emotions of this tragic loss.”
