JACKSONVILLE, Fla.---You had a problem, asked First Coast News to look into it and now we're getting you answers.
A viewer reached out to us concerned over a dozen street lights that were out along Dunn Avenue on Jacksonville's Northside. Both JEA and FDOT told us Tuesday the other was responsible for fixing the lights.
We now have an answer.
It turns out FDOT does own the lights along the stretch of Dunn Avenue between North Campus Boulevard and Creative Drive, but it's the responsibility of JEA to maintain them.
“Depending on the area in our service territory either FDOT or JEA maintains those lights for FDOT. There was obviously some confusion and I want to apologize for the customer," said JEA spokeswoman Gerri Boyce.
Boyce says of the 150,000 street lights in their coverage area, some are owned by FDOT, but maintained by JEA as is the case here.
“This one, unfortunately, because of the confusion on who maintained what lights did fall through the cracks," Boyce said.
Boyce credits the concerned customer who reached out to us, so they can get to roughly the 14 streetlights based on our count back up and running.
“Our goal is to have them fixed by next week," she said.
Shortly after our interview, we could already see crews on both sides of Dunn Avenue including near Baptist Health searching for the root of the problem. Crews in the field say they have yet to find the source, saying it could be one breaker or a light by light issue.
We also called back to FDOT that confirmed those much taller lights around the I-295 ramps are owned and maintained by FDOT and following our story they too are reviewing the problem with the lights that have been out.
Boyce says JEA is also looking at miscommunication within the agencies.
“It would be pure speculation at this point to know why it fell through the cracks," Boyce said. "When I was talking to the director of that area earlier, he said this is a process that we definitely need to look at.”
JEA encourages anyone that sees a street light that is out to call 665-6000 or go to jea.com.
