ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Teco People's Gas said it has started restoring gas to neighbors impacted by a gas outage.
However, it does not have a timetable as to when all of its customers will be restored and said it could take days.
It said it will end restoration Tuesday night at 10 p.m. and continue Wednesday morning.
Residents in a north St. Johns County community said the gas outage is impacted homes in a gated community with more than 630 homes and thousands of people. Several Durbin Park businesses had notes on the doors saying they’re closed due to gas failure.
Scott Forshey-Friedman, the HOA board president at the Celestina Community on Race Track Road said homes do not have hot water nor heat if they are heated by gas (some are electric).
Forshey-Friedman says the outage started just before 6:00 p.m. Monday evening. Because it's cold and six days before Christmas, he says he's worried about how long the outage may last. He says company representatives in the community described an extensive process in what it would take to fix the outage.
Teco said it has to go door-to-door to turn on gas meters at each impacted house. An adult has to be home at the time in order to properly check appliances for safety.
Teco said it is providing customers with updates via email. It said its also updating its website and social media pages.
