New Florida driver's license numbers will be issued to help prevent fraud

Florida officials say the driver's license number format will remain the same, but will require four of the numbers to be randomized.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida driver's licenses and identification cards issued after July 31 will require a randomized four-digit number to help protect individuals' identities.

The Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV) said the format on the card will remain the same, but a more randomized version will be provided "to improve security and safeguard individuals' identities."

The new number randomization will apply to individuals renewing, replacing or getting a license for the first time.

Once you receive a new license number, the only time it will change again is if you change your last name, FHSMV says.

To replace an expired or missing driver's license, you can do so online at the MyDMV Portal.

Not everyone can renew their license online. Customers must go into an office if...

  • a customer used the online convenience service on their last renewal.
  • a customer is not REAL ID compliant.
  • a customer wishes to update their photo.
  • the customer changes their name using an original or certified court order or marriage certificate.
  • a customer wishes to add or remove a designation or has a court order to update their credential.
  • a customer is getting a Florida driver license or ID card for the first time.
  • the customer holds a commercial driver license.
  • the license has the word "TEMPORARY" printed on it.
