JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Duval County Public Schools announced a new Chief of School Police on Thursday, replacing Greg Burton, who left the role last year due to personal medical reasons.
Jackson Short will be taking on the role. He's a veteran law enforcement officer who previously had a career with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the State Attorney's Office.
During Short's time with JSO, he was in leadership positions including:
- Department Director, Investigations and Homeland Security Division
- Division Chief, Homeland Security Division
- Assistant Division Chief, Special Operation Section
- Police Lieutenant, Integrity and Special Investigations
He began his career with JSO as a patrol officer in 1998.
“I am humbled and honored to serve in such an impactful role and lead a stellar team of law enforcement professionals who single-mindedly work each day to protect children and ensure our schools are safe,” said Short.
Short earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Florida and a master’s degree from American Military University.
“I am excited for the future of our police department under Chief Short’s leadership,” said Dr. Dana Kriznar, superintendent of schools.
“Mr. Short is the perfect person to continue building on the success of Chief Burton both in implementing strong strategies for school safety and generating incredible enthusiasm throughout the department for the special mission of school police. I am delighted that he will be joining our leadership team.”
