JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Dramatic video from a December crash involving a Jacksonville driver with a medical issue raises an interesting question.
How does an officer determine negligence on the part of a driver who has medical emergency during his/her commute?
The Florida Legislature determines reckless driving as the following:
Any person who drives any vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.
The driver involved in this crash from last year is a diabetic. He experience a medical issue on the road and was later charged with reckless driving. The driver said he is diabetic and a nurse checks his blood sugar.
A motorcyclist followed the driver as he 'pinballed' along the highway.
"Dude, he is about to flip," yelled the motorcyclist who was recording the incident on his helmet camera.
As the driver made his way down the highway, he swerved from side to side. The driver ran into a light pole and the barricades on the interstate. The car finally comes to a stop, but the driver's foot is on the gas.
"This whole ordeal was about 8 miles long," said the motorcyclist in a phone interview Tuesday.
He requested that his name not be used for the story. He says his first reaction was to make get the driver out of the smoking vehicle.
"I wanted to get in there and try to figure out what was going on. I reached in the door and turned the car off," he said. "I asked him was he OK."
Moments later about a dozen others stop to help. Shortly after the man was put on a cart and taken to the hospital.
As for the biker, he says he and those that stopped aren't heroes.
"All I see are people looking out for people," the motorcyclist said, "We all saw that someone needed some help regardless of the situation and we all jumped out and helped him out."
The driver had no major injuries.
