JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — First Coast News is hearing from the mother of a Jacksonville soldier who was shot by her estranged husband in 2018.
It happened on the Fort Campbell base in Kentucky in 2018.
Brittney Silvers, who family is now referring to as Brittney Mitchell, had a restraining order against her then husband, Victor Silvers.
Silvers was sentenced to life in prison last week.
Brittney’s mom says although he will spend the rest of his life in prison, nothing can bring her daughter back.
“It’s no justice, period, because there is no justice, she's not coming back and that’s it,” said April Mitchell, Brittney’s mother.
April Mitchell says nothing can replace the emptiness she feels after losing her child.
“The only thing I can say is time heals, but it still hurts and it’s going to always hurt,” she says.
April Mitchell says she later found out her daughter and son-in-law were in an abusive relationship.
She says she didn’t see any signs because her daughter was very private.
“Any time they were around us it was never any type of indication that they were arguing and fussing and fighting and if they did, they didn’t do it in front of me,” she says.
Silvers not only killed his estranged wife but also shot her friend who survived.
Brittney’s mother says she wishes her daughter would’ve told the family what was happening between her and her husband.
“These people, you need to tell, you can’t go through that and you got to tell someone, even if you tell it’s still get out of that relationship,” she says.
Court records show the two had been in an abusive marriage for at least seven years.
There are currently two domestic violence and abuse shelters and programs in Jacksonville with one offering a hotline and two offering emergency shelter. Here is more information.
