JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The relocation of Jacksonville's Museum of Science & History is one step closer to becoming a reality.
MOSH announced Monday that it surpassed the $40 million fundraising requirement to build its future home on the Northbank. The fundraising goal was outlined in MOSH's development agreement with the City of Jacksonville.
Launched in 2020, the MOSH Genesis capital campaign has received support from public and private entities, including a $10 million commitment from CSX, a $5 million appropriation from the Florida 2024-2025 budget and a $2.5 million donation from VyStar Credit Union.
"We are grateful to every supporter whose contribution has brought us to this first major milestone. Building a project of this magnitude requires the unity of an entire community," said Jill Davis, the MOSH Genesis capital campaign chair and vice chair of the MOSH Board of Trustees.
MOSH has been open at its current location at 1025 Museum Circle near Friendship Park on the Southbank since 1969. Developers say the museum has outgrown the 33,000-square-foot space and is looking to expand when it relocates across the river.
MOSH said it plans for the new state-of-the-art museum to "significantly" expand its capacity to serve more visitors year-round, with approximately 130,000 square feet across three floors.
"We are continuing work on the building's design, exhibits and interactivity with its future setting at the Shipyards," said MOSH CEO Dr. Alistair Dove.
As of the last update, construction on the new MOSH site will begin in December 2025.
