RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Morgan & Morgan, a national consumer law firm, is suing Monster Beverage Corporation on behalf of more than 100 of consumers that the firm claims were "seriously injured" as a result of drinking energy drinks.
In a news release entitled "New Lawsuits Against Monster Aim to Expose Dangers of Energy Drinks," Morgan & Morgan says "life-threatening injuries" were sustained by some consumers who did not have any "signification prior health issues."
The plaintiffs in the suit range from 14 to 42 years of age and all have suffered either heart attacks, strokes, brain damage and kidney failure, the release says.
Morgan & Morgan argues that Monster was able to skirt regulation before 2013 because their drinks were classified as a dietary supplement, meaning they weren't regulated by the Food & Drug Administration.
The law firm also levels an array of claims against the beverage company:
- Product defect
- Improper/lack of testing
- Lack of warnings
- Concealment of known side effects
This is not the first time a lawsuit has been filed against the energy drink giant. Reuters reports that as far back as 2012, people were suing the company over their family member's deaths.
Morgan & Morgan goes on to claim that Monster isn't the only culprit: the entire industry is at fault.
