JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The body of a woman who was reportedly last seen on the Mathews Bridge last week was recovered from the St. Johns River, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
According to a JSO incident report, 27-year-old Jareesha Wilkerson went missing on Sunday, Dec. 8 when her car was involved in a crash on the bridge.
A witness reportedly told JFRD first responders they may have seen her go over the edge of the bridge.
Wilkerson's girlfriend arrived on scene and spoke with officers, saying she was on the phone with her while Jareesha was driving over the bridge when Jareesha said "this stupid car," referring to a re-occurring issue with her car, before not responding. She did not answer the phone when her girlfriend called back 20 minutes later, according to the report.
Another driver told officers she was driving across the bridge when another car swerved into her lane, causing her to hit the median and multiple sides of the bridge. One person was injured. It's unclear in the report if Wilkerson's car, a gold Chevrolet Impala, was the one that swerved in front of the other car, causing the crash.
Witnesses said Wilkerson's Impala was found parked on the side of the bridge, and officers did not see significant damage to the car. No witnesses on scene recall seeing Wilkerson walking away from a crash.
Another officer sent to the scene attempted to find Wilkerson by calling area hospitals and law enforcement databases, but no one was able to find her.
Jareesha's phone was found in the front passenger floorboard of the Impala, and there were no indications of her location, or possible motivations for going over the bridge. Her family members also could not recall any history of drug use or mental health issues.
