Man dead after making 'abrupt lane change' in crash on Old St. Augustine Road

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the man was moving at a high rate of speed and was not wearing a seatbelt.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man died in a single-vehicle crash on Old St. Augustine Road in Jacksonville Friday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the crash happened around 10:55 a.m. in the 14200 block of the road, which is located near Interstate 95.

Police say the man, who was 29 years old, was in the left lane, traveling westbound, when he made an "abrupt lane change" to move into the right lane.

Hungerford told First Coast News the man struck a few lane delineator markers, the curb and then a tree.

"There's a possibility that the lane delineators, when he was moving across and struck them, it may have stalled him," Hungerford said. "But, that's a guess, it's hard to say. We'll have more information from the M.E's [medical examiner's] office in a couple months."

Hungerford also said the man was moving at a high rate of speed and was not wearing a seatbelt.

"That driver was unconscious upon arrival of police, who started CPR," Hungerford said. "The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue [Department] responded and transported the gentleman to the hospital, where unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased."

The sheriff's office did not release the identity of the man. There were "at least two witnesses that are eyewitnesses" who saw the crash, Hungerford said.

This crash marks the 103rd traffic fatality in Duval County this year, according to JSO.
