Man dead after losing control of ATV, crashing into tree on Jacksonville's Westside, police say

JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the man lost control of the ATV he was riding when he "drove down into a small culvert." His son was with him at the time, too.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man in his late-40s died Tuesday night after he lost control of an ATV he was riding and crashed into a tree on Jacksonville's Westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told First Coast News.

JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the crash happened at approximately 7:55 p.m. in the 7200 block of Commonwealth Avenue.

Hungerford says the man was riding the ATV eastbound along the southside of the roadway on the grass shoulder, and lost control when he "drove down into a small culvert." He says the man was riding along with his son, who was on a separate ATV than the one he was on.

JSO says first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and took the man to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Doesn't appear he was wearing a helmet," Hungerford told First Coast News.

This crash marked as the 45th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, according to Hungerford.

Police did not release the man's identity.
