St. Johns County deputies arrest man for DUI manslaughter after crash kills Tesla driver

Deputies said the 49-year-old ran a red light and crashed into a white Tesla at an intersection.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla — The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office arrested a man who deputies said caused a deadly crash while driving intoxicated they announced Friday.

The crash happened January 2 after witnesses called 911 to report a Ford Raptor driving recklessly on St. Johns Parkway. The sheriff's office said deputies followed after the truck while watching the driver "swerve and strike curbs."

The sheriff's office said the driver then ran a red light at the intersection of St. Johns Parkway and Silverlake Drive, colliding with a white Tesla.

The driver of the Tesla was killed, and deputies said the driver of the Raptor, identified as 49-year-old Phillip Barry, suffered just minor injuries.

Deputies said Barry showed signs of impairment at the time of the crash. Following a DUI investigation and toxicology report, investigators concluded that Barry was under the influence of "numerous" controlled substances.

Barry was arrested and charged on Aug. 2 with DUI, DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, vehicular homicide and reckless driving.
