'It's been amazing': Kings Head British Pub in St. Augustine closing after 32 years

Frequent patrons have one more week to come get a Shepherd's Pie or British beer one last time.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — An iconic bar in St. Augustine is saying goodbye after more than three decades.

Kings Head British Pub announced it will close its doors in a week.

“When I met Gisella online, I was like, ‘I’m going to bring you somewhere British because that’s where I feel at home and I feel more comfortable doing that,'" said Tim Taylor while enjoying a drink at the pub Sunday.

Five years later - Tim and Gisella Taylor just got married.

Kings Head British Pub was the site of their first date, their first anniversary and a spot that will always have a place in their relationship.

“It’s sentimental," said Gisella Taylor. "Right? It’s quaint and it’s closing.”

The British flags and pictures of the queen will come down in the next week, as the family behind the British-themed pub looks for a new adventure.

“I’m going to travel. My partner and I, we’re going to get an RV and see ourselves off," said Chef Elaine Frew. "Perhaps go to see some of the things I see pictures of.”

Frew's mother helped build the pub in the 1990s and passed it down to her after she retired.

Before Frew can be off to the country, she has to get through an emotional week, seeing some familiar faces one last time.

“We had no idea," said Frew. "We thought we were just going to slip out quietly, but it’s not happening.”

Since making the closing announcement, the pub has been so busy the cooks ran out of food to make, and they even started running out of beer.

Even when it closes next week, management plans to leave a piece behind.

“Anywhere you go, if people are giving directions, they’ll say, ‘Oh you know the double-decker bus? Yes, I know the bus,'" said Frew. "Hopefully that’s staying right where it is so that people won’t get lost.”

The Taylors will take another trip to the pub later this week, to decide between their favorite dishes one last time.

“The fish and chips are good, but I also like the shepherd’s pie," said Gisella Taylor.

“The English breakfast," said Tim Taylor. "They do it once a month.”

The pub won’t pour the last beer until next Sunday, so you have time to say goodbye. However, owners are recommending to call ahead for reservations considering how busy they’ve been since they made the announcement.
