JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman died Wednesday night after being hit by an SUV while walking across North Main Street in Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO Sergeant Hungerford says the crash happened at approximately 10:02 p.m. in the 900 block of North Main Street.

The woman who was in her early-60s, was walking westbound across North Main Street, midblock and just north of State Street, when she was struck by a Ford SUV that was traveling northbound on Main Street, according to Hungerford.

Police say the driver of the SUV is a man in his mid-30s who "stopped and called to report the incident and request rescue."

First responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department then responded, and pronounced the woman dead.

"The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with detectives," Hungerford said. "There were no indicators of impairment."

Hungerford further told First Coast News the crash is the 124th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, and is the 33rd traffic fatality involving a pedestrian.
