JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The property owner of a Northside home arrived at his home around 10 a.m. to do some work Saturday morning and found a 20-year-old man inside. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the 20-year-old man had broken into the house, and police believe he was a would-be burglar.
The property owner, 59-year-old Michael Jay Acord, was armed with a gun and fired one shot at the unknown man, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jay Farhat.
The would-be burglar later died at UF Health.
Sgt. Farhat said at this time, it appears to be a justifiable homicide, but investigators still have work to do before making a final determination.
According to a JSO report, Acord was arrested Saturday on a charge of willful violation of injunction for protection against repeat violence, as he was served an injunction in January 2012 that stated "Respondent shall not use or possess a firearm or ammunition."
Acord used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot the 20-year-old man once and told police he did so because he was scared. A neighbor had allowed Acord to borrow the shotgun. Acord also told police that he had nine additional guns at his house, the report stated.
Acord was released from the Duval County Jail on Sunday on $10,003 bond.
