JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office plans to pay tribute to Corrections Officer Brad McNew with a procession Monday morning after he was shot and killed while off-duty over the weekend.
McNew, a 24-year veteran with JSO, was killed early Saturday after he tried to intervene in a domestic dispute at a Northside truck stop. The suspect in McNew's killing has been arrested and is being held on no bond in North Carolina.
JSO said McNew's body will be transferred from the Duval County Medical Examiner's Office to the Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Monday.
JSO, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and other partners will be in attendance to pay their respects.
The procession will pass UF Health Jacksonville and continue through the Springfield and Riverside neighborhoods.
The procession will continue along the following route:
- Jefferson Street to 11th Street
- 11th Street to Boulevard Street
- Boulevard Street to 8th Street
- 8th Street back to Jefferson Street
- Jefferson Street, which continues as Riverside Avenue towards Edison Avenue
Police said the public is welcome to be part of the procession by lining up along the designated routes. Officials ask anyone participating to stand on the sidewalk, without blocking any travel lanes, and listen to emergency officials.
Hundreds of people gathered in Atlantic Beach's Jack Russell Park Saturday night for a candlelight vigil to remember McNew's life. His son, Liam McNew, said his father had a helpful nature to the very end.
“I know he didn’t have any regrets when he helped that woman who was being abused,” Liam McNew said.
JSO announced the arrest of Demaurea Grant, 29, the man accused of shooting and killing McNew, during a press conference Sunday.
"Today's arrest is about accountability for a person who essentially took the life of a man who was attempting to help another human being," Sheriff T.K. Waters said.
