JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department will take over the Jacksonville Beach Fire Department thanks to an 18-0 vote during a Jacksonville City Council meeting.
JFRD shared the news via Twitter Tuesday evening just before 7 p.m.
The unanimous vote comes four months after Jacksonville Beach Commissioners voted to merge the two departments back in May.
In the last 20 years, the city of Jacksonville has offered fire services in inter-local agreements in Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach and Baldwin. This latest agreement will add Jacksonville Beach to that list.
Jacksonville currently has around 1500 firefighters. Under the plan, Jacksonville Beaches’ nearly 30 would become a part of JFRD. The trucks, ladders and stations would stay operational and would become the property and responsibility of the City of Jacksonville.
